Sometimes it does. Other times you change a setting, reload the page, and nothing moves at all.

That is because font size is set in several different places, and each one beats the others in a fixed order. This guide walks through every place you can change it, in plain steps, with the exact screen paths. It also explains what to do when a change refuses to show up.

Where Font Size Is Actually Controlled in WordPress

WordPress sets text size in layers. Knowing the order saves a lot of guesswork, so start here before you change anything.

The bottom layer is your theme. It ships with a type scale, and that is what you see on a fresh install. Above that sits Global Styles, which is the site-wide typography panel in the Site Editor. Above that sit block-level settings, which you apply to one paragraph or heading at a time. Custom CSS sits above all of them.

The rule is simple. The more specific the setting, the more it wins. A size you set on a single paragraph overrides the site-wide setting. Custom CSS can override both, depending on how it is written.

Your theme type also matters. Block themes give you the full Site Editor with a Styles panel. Classic themes do not, and they send you to the Customizer or to CSS instead. Check which one you have first, in Appearance. If you see Editor, you have a block theme. If you see Customize instead, you have a classic theme.

Change the Font Size of One Block

This is the quickest method, and it is the right one when a single heading or paragraph needs to stand out. It changes nothing else on the site.

Open the post in the block editor. Click the paragraph, heading or list you want to resize. The settings sidebar opens on the right. If it is hidden, click the gear icon in the top right corner.

In the sidebar, find the Typography section and look for Size. You will see preset buttons such as S, M, L and XL. These come from your theme, so the exact labels vary. Click one and the text resizes straight away in the editor.

For an exact number, click the small icon beside the Size label and choose Set custom size. A number field appears with a unit dropdown. You can pick px, em, rem or percent. Type your value and the block updates live.

Save the post and check the front end. If you are new to this screen, our walkthrough on how to use the WordPress block editor covers the sidebar in more detail.

One caution. Block-level sizes apply only to that block, on that page. If you find yourself setting the same size over and over, move up a layer and use Global Styles instead.

Change Every Font Size at Once with Global Styles

Global Styles is the right tool when you want all body text, or all headings, to change across the whole site. It works on block themes only.

Go to Appearance → Editor. In the left panel, click Styles, then click the pencil icon to start editing. In the Styles sidebar, click Typography.

You will see a list of element groups: Text, Links, Headings, Captions and Buttons. Each one can be set separately. Click Text to change body copy. Click Headings to change all headings at once, or open a single level such as H2 to change only that one.

Inside each group you get the same controls as the block sidebar: font family, size, appearance, line height and letter spacing. Set your size and watch the preview update behind the panel.

Click Save when you are happy. The change applies everywhere on the site that uses the default styling.

Global Styles has one habit worth knowing. It will not override a size you already set on an individual block. Those blocks keep their own value until you clear it. To clear one, open the block, click the icon beside the Size label, and choose Reset.

Change Font Size in a Classic Theme

Classic themes have no Site Editor, so the route is different. You have two options, and which one you get depends on the theme.

Start with the Customizer, at Appearance → Customize. Look for a panel named Typography, Fonts, or sometimes General. Many classic themes include size controls for body text and headings there. Change the value, watch the live preview on the right, then click Publish.

If no typography panel exists, the theme simply does not expose those settings. That is common, and it is not a fault. In that case you move to CSS, which is covered in the next section.

Our guide to the WordPress Customizer and how to access it explains what else lives on that screen.

If you are still writing in the classic editor rather than blocks, note that there is no font size dropdown in the toolbar by default. You set size with CSS or with the theme’s own settings. Our article on keeping the classic editor in WordPress covers that setup.

Use Additional CSS When the Settings Cannot Reach

Sometimes the element you want to resize has no setting at all. A widget title, a form label, or a menu item are common examples. CSS is the answer, and you do not need to touch any theme files to use it.

On a classic theme, go to Appearance → Customize → Additional CSS. On a block theme, go to Appearance → Editor → Styles, click the three-dot menu at the top of the Styles panel, and choose Additional CSS.

Type a rule that targets the element you want. For example, to set all body paragraphs to 18 pixels:

p {
 font-size: 18px;
}

To resize only one element, right-click it on the front end and choose Inspect. Your browser shows you the class name to target. Use that class instead of a broad tag so you do not change more than you meant to.

Additional CSS is stored in the database, not in a theme file. It survives theme updates, and you can delete it at any time. That makes it far safer than editing
style.css
directly. If you must edit theme files, work in a WordPress child theme, and take a full backup first.

Define Your Own Size Presets and Fluid Scaling in theme.json

The S, M, L and XL buttons in the editor are not fixed. They are defined in a file called
theme.json
, and you can change what each one means. This is the developer route, and it is worth it when you want a consistent scale across a whole site.

Never edit the parent theme’s file directly. A theme update will overwrite it. Create a child theme, copy
theme.json
into it, and edit the copy. Back up the site first, and make the change on a staging copy if the site is live.

The sizes live under
settings.typography.fontSizes
. Each entry has a slug, a name and a size:

"fontSizes": [
 { "slug": "small", "name": "S", "size": "1rem" },
 { "slug": "medium", "name": "M", "size": "1.125rem" },
 { "slug": "large", "name": "L", "size": "1.5rem" }
]

Save the file and reload the editor. The preset buttons now use your values, and every block already set to Medium picks up the new size automatically. That is the real benefit: you change one file and the whole site follows.

If file structure is unfamiliar territory, our breakdown of WordPress theme files explains what each one does.

Let Text Scale with the Screen Using Fluid Typography

A fixed size has one drawback. A heading that looks right on a desktop screen can be far too large on a phone. Fluid typography solves that by letting each size grow and shrink with the viewport.

WordPress has supported this since version 6.1, and it is switched on in the same
theme.json
file. Add the fluid setting under typography:

"typography": {
 "fluid": true
}

With that single line, WordPress generates a scaling rule for every preset size you have defined. Large headings shrink on narrow screens without you writing a media query.

You can also control the range for a single size. Give that entry a
fluid
object with
min
and
max
values, and WordPress keeps the size inside those bounds. That stops a heading from collapsing to something unreadable on a small phone.

Many current block themes already enable this. If your headings already resize smoothly when you narrow the browser window, fluid typography is on and you have nothing to change.

Why Your Font Size Change Did Not Apply

If the size looks right in the editor but wrong on the live page, work through these in order. One of them is almost always the answer.

A caching layer is serving the old page. Clear your site cache, then your browser cache, then reload. If your host runs its own cache, clear that too.

A block-level size is overriding the global one. Open the block and check the Typography panel. If a size is set there, reset it so the block falls back to Global Styles.

Another CSS rule is more specific. Right-click the text, choose Inspect, and look at the Styles panel. Your rule will be shown crossed out if something is beating it. Target a more specific selector rather than reaching for
!important
.

You edited the wrong template. Blog posts, pages and archives can use different templates. Confirm you changed the one the page actually uses.

The editor itself is misbehaving. If the sidebar controls are missing or frozen, our guide to common WordPress block editor problems covers the usual fixes.

Choosing Sizes People Can Actually Read

Before you finish, make sure the sizes serve your readers rather than just your design taste. A few habits help here.

Keep body text at 16 pixels or above. That is the common baseline for comfortable reading, and going smaller costs you more than it gains. Many sites now sit at 18 pixels for long-form content.

Use relative units such as rem rather than px where you can. Relative units respect the reader’s own browser font setting, which matters for anyone who has increased it. A fixed pixel size ignores that choice.

Give long text room to breathe. Line height of about 1.5 and a line length of 60 to 80 characters do more for readability than the font size alone.

Keep the gaps between levels clear. If your H2 and H3 are nearly the same size, the page structure stops being visible at a glance.

Finally, check the result on a phone before you call it done. Most visitors will see it there first.

A Quick Recap, and Where to Get Help

For a one-off change, use the block sidebar. For a site-wide change on a block theme, use Appearance → Editor → Styles → Typography. On a classic theme, try Appearance → Customize first, then Additional CSS if no typography panel exists.

For full control of the preset scale, edit
theme.json
in a child theme, and turn on fluid typography so text behaves on small screens. Back up before any file-level change, and test on staging where you can.

If you also want to change the typeface rather than just the size, our guide on how to add and use custom fonts in WordPress is the next step.
