You found a theme you like. Now you want to change one colour, or move one thing. So you edit the theme files directly. It works, and you feel clever.<\/p>\n

Then the theme updates. Every change you made is gone.<\/p>\n

A child theme stops that from happening. This guide explains what a child theme is, how it works, when you need one, and when you honestly do not.<\/p>\n

What Is a WordPress Child Theme?<\/h2>\n

A child theme is a small theme that borrows everything from another theme. That other theme is called the parent. The child inherits the parent’s layout, styles, and features. It only holds the bits you want to change.<\/p>\n

Think of it as a transparent sheet laid over a printed page. The page underneath stays exactly as it was. You draw your changes on the sheet. Lift the sheet away and the original is untouched.<\/p>\n

WordPress loads the parent first, then the child. Where the child has an instruction, the child wins. Where it stays silent, the parent takes over.<\/p>\n

The Update Problem It Solves<\/h3>\n

Theme authors release updates for security patches, bug fixes, and new features. Installing an update replaces the theme folder completely.<\/p>\n

The first is the theme name, which is what you will see in your dashboard. The second is the template line, which names the parent theme’s folder. That name must match the folder exactly, including capital letters. Get it wrong and WordPress will refuse to activate the child.<\/p>\n

The Functions File<\/h3>\n

The second common file is functions.php. This is where you add custom PHP, and where classic themes load the parent’s stylesheet.<\/p>\n

Here is an important difference from the stylesheet. A child’s style.css replaces the parent’s file. A child’s functions.php does not replace anything. Both run, with the child loading first. So you never copy the parent’s whole functions file across. You only add what is new.<\/p>\n

Template Files<\/h3>\n

Want to change how single posts look? Copy that one template from the parent folder into the child folder, then edit your copy. WordPress will use yours instead.<\/p>\n

Copy only the templates you actually need to change. Every file you copy is a file you now have to maintain yourself. If the parent improves that template later, your copy will not get the improvement.<\/p>\n

Child Themes and Block Themes in 2026<\/h2>\n

Block themes changed the picture. They build pages from blocks and store their design choices in a settings file rather than in PHP.<\/p>\n

Child themes still work with block themes, and the rules are simpler. You often do not need functions.php at all, because the design system loads styles for you.<\/p>\n
